Review: Rock Jaw Alfa Genus V2, audiophile-grade earphones on a budget

rockjaw-alfa-genus-v2

One of the things I love most about the modern tech industry is that so many lesser-known companies are building great gear for a fraction of the cost of the big-name brands. One such example is British company, Rock Jaw Audio. Its flagship product, the Alfa Genus V2, is an incredibly versatile and well-made set of earphones that’ll set you back less than $50.

Here’s how to use the Edge screen on Galaxy S7 Edge

galaxy-s7-edge-panel
For the past few years, since the Galaxy Note 4, Samsung has built special versions of its flagship phones with an ‘Edge’ screen. Initially, with the Galaxy Note Edge, the single, large curved secondary display was mostly there to show off what Samsung could build rather than being particularly useful. It was also huge.

Since then, the Korean tech giant has been working on developing it in to a useful feature. Now, thanks to third party support and an actual a decent implementation as far as functionality goes, the Edge screen on the Galaxy S7 Edge can be genuinely useful at times. Here’s how to use it…

Galaxy S7 Active breaks cover in real-life images, complete with AT&T Logo, camo-print back

galaxy-s7-active

Rumors of the upcoming durable version of Samsung’s latest flagships have gone quiet more recently. Until today, that is. Real-life images have been published this morning showing the unreleased Galaxy S7 Active in all of its ‘glory’. To break it down to its most basic description, it looks like a regular Galaxy S7 with a bulky 8-bit camo-patterned case attached.

Google feeds its AI machines steamy romance novels to improve natural language processing

joaquin-phoenix

Over the past couple of years, Google has been implementing a number of AI, or machine-learning technologies, in to its products. Whether it’s intuitive search within the Photos app, better automatic thumbnail creation in YouTube, ‘Smart Reply’ in Inbox, or just straight-out beating an 18-time Go world champion, its artificial intelligent brains are being developed and honed.

With all of its incredible talent, apparently, there’s still work to be done when it comes to results from neural networks sounding and looking like naturally spoken or written human language. The solution: feeding it steamy romance…

5.7-inch Huawei Honor V8 could be available in 1080p regular and QHD ‘Plus’ models

honor-v8

We’ve read (and written) about the Honor V8 handset a couple of times over the past few weeks. Huawei’s sub-brand is expected to unveil the budget-friendly high-end phablet at an event next week, and it could be the first Honor phone to be equipped with a dual camera system, similar to the setup on the more premium Huawei P9.

Initial leaks and online listings suggested that the Honor V8 would come with a Quad HD screen (another first for Honor), but we’ve been doing a little digging on TENAA and discovered another model of the same phone with a lower resolution screen, less powerful processor and less storage.

Oppo’s line-leading R7s and R7 Plus to get almost stock Android experience this month with Project Spectrum

oppo-r7s
You may remember a few months ago, Oppo released Project Spectrum for its Find 7 handset. The idea was to remove some of what many of us find frustrating about ColorOS (Oppo’s custom Android skin), and make it much more like stock Android. While it retains some useful Oppo software tricks, it looks and feels a lot more like ‘regular’ Android.

HTC might finally launch an Android Wear smartwatch in June

htc
Rumors of an HTC-made smartwatch have been around for quite some time. In fact, in the build up to last year’s HTC One M9 launch, it was expected that the company would announce an Android Wear device — or smartwatch of some kind — alongside 2015’s all-metal gold-tinted flagship. Instead, the company showed off its Vive VR headset and a fitness band. Now, it looks like its smartwatch plans are close to fruition.

Review: Oppo F1 Plus is familiar looking, surprisingly nice, but clearly imperfect [Video]

oppo-f1-plus-lead

Oppo is one of the fastest growing smartphone manufacturers in the world. Having sold around 50 million smartphones last year, it’s closing in on LG, which is pretty impressive given the size of the company. The F1 Plus looks to continue that success in 2016 and having spent some time with the phone, Oppo’s got a great shot of doing just that, even if the device needs a little work.

Report: Google once met with Telegram chief to discuss $1 billion acquisition [Update: Telegram says it’s BS]

google-telegram

Update: In a comment made to TNW, a Telegram spokesperson denied all acquisition rumors with a strongly-worded rebuttal.

“This is complete bullshit. There were no acquisition talks, no plans for any such thing either.”

You may remember quite a few years ago, it was rumored that Google was looking in to buying WhatsApp for $1 billion, and again later on for $10 billion. Both times, those rumors were denied by Google and — of course — we now know that even if they did bid, the deal didn’t go down.

Facebook bought the popular messaging app for a cool $19B, but Google seemingly hasn’t given up on strengthening its messaging portfolio. Reports from Russia are claiming that Google chief, Sundar Pichai once met with Telegram’s founder to discuss a $1 billion acquisition.

hp-chromebook-vs-macbook

A short while ago, Google and HP announced a brand new metal-clad Chromebook which boasted some impressive specs, including the powerful, efficient Core M chips from Intel, high resolution screens, generous RAM and more than one Type-C port. In a lot of ways, this is the more affordable laptop the Pixel should have been, and will give the Dell Chromebook 13 a run for its money. But how does it compare to the other Core M laptop; Apple’s latest 12-inch MacBook?
