LG announces the GX, an Optimus G Pro variant with G2’s ‘knock on’ feature

LGgx33

Just when you thought there wasn’t room for yet another variation of an existing model, LG has announced the LG GX, a 5,5-inch phablet which is essentially an LG Optimus G Pro in a different case, a few user-interface tweaks and the ‘knock on’ feature from the G2 (where the device switches on when you tap twice on the screen).

The specs are identical to the Optimus: 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display, quad-core Snapdragon 600 CPU, 13MP camera, 32GB storage and a 3,140mAh battery.

It’s only available in Korea at launch.

LG sells a million Optimus G Pro handsets in Korea

optimus-g-pro-sales

LG has sold a million Optimus G Pro in South Korea just four months after it launched, reports AndroidCentral. That amounts to 2% of the local population owning one.

The manufacturer claims that this is the fastest it has reached the 1 million device milestone in its own country, hitting it in just 4 months with average daily sales of over 8,000 for the period. LG Says this tops its previous record sales of the Optimus LTE in Korea, which took a full 7 months.

Brand loyalty to local companies is extremely strong in South Korea, with both LG and Samsung reaping the rewards, and it’s notable that LG hasn’t released figures for sales outside the country, but it’s still a pretty impressive achievement.

5.5-inch LG Optimus G Pro spy shot and specs leak

There have been rumors of an upcoming Optimus device from LG, dubbed the “Optimus G Pro”.

Official press material for the device leaked last month alongside some specs that included a 5-inch 1,920-by-1,080 display, 1.7Ghz Snapdragon S4 processor, and a 13-megapixel camera. Japanese carriers recently confirmed that device, but today PhoneArena posted images and specs for an Optimus G Pro variant with a 5.5-inch display.

Apart from the slightly larger display on the device pictured above, which could be headed to United States and European Union markets, the majority of the specs for the device are the same as previous leaks.

According to the report, the device will include a 5.5-inch 1,080-by-1,920 full HD IPS-LCD screen, LTE, 2GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel rear camera, 1.7 GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor. Other specs include a 3,140-mAh battery, microSD card slot, 32GB of onboard storage, and slim port for HDMI out.

There’s a good chance we’ll get our first official look at the device next month at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

LG-OptimusG-ProThe image above comes courtesy of Engadget and shows what appears to be some official promo material for the LG’s next Optimus G device, the LG Optimus G Pro. While we don’t get a lot of specs from the image itself, the report passed along rumored specs from BlogofMobile. It claimed the device will sport a 5-inch, 1,920-by-1,080 display, a 3,000-mAh battery, LTE, 32GB of memory, 2GB of RAM, and a 1.7Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064. Other specs mentioned in the report include a 13-megapixel main camera, 2.4-megapixel front-facing camera, and dimensions of 139-by-70-by-10.1mm. It’s a possibility we’ll hear more about the device at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.

In related news, Korean news agency Yonhap reported today (via TNW) that the LG Optimus G sold over 1 million units since its launch in September. We’re guessing that doesn’t include the estimated 375,000 units it sold of the Nexus 4, which is essentially the same device.
