EMUI 9.1 beta

[Update: Now rolling out in EU] EMUI 9.1 now in second public beta, available on 14 further devices

While it may be a terribly tough time for Huawei of late, it’s even tougher in many regards for the millions around the globe that already have the Chinese handsets. That said, despite a short 90-day reprieve from Google, Huawei is pushing an update for their EMUI 9.1 beta which adds 14 more devices to the program.

Review: The Honor View 20 is a great phone but in no way a OnePlus killer [Video]

Often when reviewing a smartphone it’s easy — though perhaps lazy — to compare one phone to another in the “X is a Y killer” format. The problem is that this makes it much easier to give you a frame for the performance of a device if you were unaware of the product at all. With that damning verdict in mind, the Honor View 20 is not a OnePlus killer no matter how hard it’s pushed as one.

Honor View 20 hands-on: The welcome future of notches [Video]

We can’t blame Apple for the notch trend, especially when the fantastic-yet-ultimately flawed Essential PH-1 had the display nodule before the Cupertino tech giant tampered with its own displays. The Honor View 20, though, is one of a coming wave of devices that are hopefully ridding us of one evil for a slightly lesser one by opting for a punch hole notch or display cutout rather than the previously seen nodule.

Review: The Honor Play is a decent low-priced gaming phone without the unnecessary fanfare [Video]

Huawei Honor Play

The Honor Play, simply put, is a cheap gaming-focused smartphone that looks good and comes in at under $300. Beyond that, it packs in some serious specs and performs superbly for the entry cost. Honor has a good record with making good quality, affordable devices and, to be honest, the Honor Play is no different.

Honor 10 goes official w/ P20 design & specs, AI camera, in-display fingerprint sensor, all for nearly half the price

Huawei makes some killer Android smartphones, and the P20 family that was unveiled earlier this year are no exception. However, they are quite expensive. Huawei says Android Nougat w/ EMUI 5.0 will hit Honor 6X in March

honor-6x-4

When the Honor 6X was unveiled at CES, we were disappointed to see that it would be shipping with a much older version of the company’s Android skin — EMUI 4.1. Although the 6X is a budget handset, it was unfortunate to hear that a phone launched in 2017 would reach customers running Marshmallow. Today, Honor has confirmed that it will begin rolling out the EMUI 5.0/Nougat update to the Honor 6X in March…

Honor promises Android Nougat for the Honor 6X within the next couple of months

Honor 6X

At CES 2017 Honor announced the 6X which is the company’s budget device that features mid-tier specs and a $249 price tag. Unfortunately, though, the public’s first reaction to the phone was rather negative mainly because of several aspects of the handset that are a bit outdated. The biggest of which is the fact that Honor is shipping the 6X to customers still running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Thankfully, Honor does promise to update the phone to Nougat (EMUI 5.0) sometime in the second quarter…

Last year Honor helped change the game in terms of hardware on budget devices with the Honor 5X, but it wasn’t a perfect device. It lacked a bit in terms of specifications, and the pre-loaded software didn’t help matters. Now, Honor is bringing the successor to that device, the Honor 6X, to the United States.

Android skins from Chinese OEMs have always been pretty bad, and Huawei has always been one of the worst contenders. Despite releasing awesome hardware, it’s always been hard to recommend the company’s devices due to the software. With the release of Nougat, though, things are improving, and now we know when Honor 8 users can expect that update.
