Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy S8, the successor to last year’s S7. Unlike last year’s model, the Galaxy S8 features a “bezel-less” screen that the company is calling an “Infinity Display.” On top of this, Samsung has unveiled its virtual assistant called Bixby which can be activated by holding down on a brand new physical button, located just below the volume rocker.

Android Oreo has been available on Pixel and Nexus devices for the better part of the last month, and that’s soon going to expand to more devices like the Nokia 8 and Essential Phone. However, it appears that Samsung is also working on bringing Oreo to the Galaxy S8, and it may arrive pretty soon…

The Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8 are all fantastic pieces of hardware, but just like anything else, they aren’t perfect. One of the biggest complaints in S8 reviews is the presence of the Bixby Button right below the volume rocker, and it seems Samsung has made a small change in response to the feedback.

The general consensus for Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 is that it’s a great phone at a ridiculous price. Of course, the large-screened and stylus wielding phone line likely won’t lose its exploding stigma for quite a while. A teardown by iFixit wields nothing too different and repairability that is in-line with recent Samsung devices.

Update 8/28/2017 — Yodafone has since updated the thread where this Update Weekly Recap was posted to say that the 7.1 listing was a typo for 7.0. The update is simply for security patches and bug fixes. Sorry, guys.

Samsung’s Galaxy S8/S8+ are two of the most notable smartphones of the year, but one thing that they’ve been lacking ever since their release is the latest version of Android. Thanks to an update from Vodafone Australia, it looks like the Android 7.1 update is right around the corner.

Former Google SVP says Android phones ‘years’ behind the iPhone in photography

Former Google senior vice president of Social, Vic Gundotra, has said that Android phones are literally years behind the iPhone when it comes to photography – and it’s Android’s fault.

Gundotra started by praising the quality of the iPhone 7 Plus camera in a Facebook post.

The end of the DSLR for most people has already arrived. I left my professional camera at home and took these shots at dinner with my iPhone 7 using computational photography (portrait mode as Apple calls it). Hard not to call these results (in a restaurant, taken on a mobile phone with no flash) stunning. Great job Apple.

Over the years, Samsung’s established a less-than-stellar track record when it comes to software updates due to heavy, custom skins. Thankfully this hasn’t effected Android security patches in the same manner. Starting today, unlocked versions of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ in the United States are receiving the July 2017 security patch.

The idea of powering your workstation with your smartphone is something that feels like it was ripped out of a TV show, but with our powerful smartphones today, it’s something that is very much achievable.

With the launch of its latest flagship, the Galaxy S8, Samsung stressed the phone’s ability to dock to a monitor and display a full desktop environment powered by the phone. Now Samsung is finally advertising the feature, and I still can’t stop thinking about how much better this would be as a laptop.

One of the minor issues many have regarding the Galaxy S8’s hardware is the presence of the Bixby button located on the left side of the phone. It’s safe to say that basically everyone would prefer to use that button for basically anything else, but Samsung has been blocking any attempts to accomplish that. After the first wave of breaking apps, Samsung’s latest updates have broken almost every other method.

The Galaxy S8 is a gorgeous piece of hardware, but with lots of glass comes plenty of ways the phone can be damaged. While I’ll happily use something like the Pixel XL or Blackberry Keyone without a case, the Galaxy S8 basically requires one.

Many would argue, though, that wrapping such a beautiful piece of hardware with a cheap piece of plastic is just wrong, and I can absolutely understand that. Why not wrap your phone in something just as good-looking? That’s where Mujjo’s leather cases come into play…

I love the hardware of the S8, the display on the S8, and even the software on the S8, but there’s one thing that makes me cringe every time I pick it up — the performance. Despite packing some of the best specs on the market today, the Galaxy S8 has some serious lag issues. Thankfully, Samsung is at least doing something to remedy this problem.
