HTC chief: One A9 isn’t an iPhone clone, design will make its way across One M and Desire series

The HTC One A9 has received a lot of attention over the past few weeks and months. Even before it launched, there were concerns that it would look a little too much like an iPhone 6/6s. Afterwards, the response has been almost unanimous. Even some of the most passionate Android fans and blogs seem to be of the opinion that the HTC One A9 looks like an iPhone clone, albeit one with a few ‘interesting’ differences

HTC almost announces a GPE One A9 without the name — but does it smell as sweet?

HTC One A9

Google Play Edition (GPE) devices are a thing of the past, but that’s not keeping HTC from tackling that very same segment of the market — the one that GPE devices failed to capture — with the “unlocked edition” of the HTC One A9.

In what feels like last-ditch effort to appeal to Android handset buyers that are usually targeted by Google itself with the Nexus line, the “unlocked edition” HTC One A9 offers updates within 15 days of Google’s Nexus line receiving them, less bloatware and pre-installed apps (no carrier software), and freedom to use the device on the carrier you choose…

Leaked image shows off the HTC Aero’s six color variants, iPhone-like design

HTC Aero

HTC’s expected to unveil at least one new smartphone before the end of the year, and this evening Evan Blass, better known as @evleaks, has shared images of an upcoming HTC device. No, the phones in the image above are not iPhones. They are HTC’s oft-rumored Aero device. The Aero is expected to be a mid-range device, and as you tell by the image above, it will come in 6 different color variants, three of which are very iPhone-esque.

Another ‘HTC One A9’ photo purportedly surfaces, corroborates previous iPhone-like images

Last month's "HTC One A9" leak

Last month’s “HTC One A9” leak

Last month we shared with you photos purporting to be of an upcoming ‘One A9’ handset from HTC. While we pitted them as likely to be fake thanks to sketchy images that had surfaced the day before, a newly-leaked photo (via OnLeaks) suggests that this design might actually be the real deal. And that’s sad, because if this phone isn’t an iPhone copycat, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one…

HTC’s rumored One A9 ‘Aero’ handset to ship w/ Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Sketchy leaked photos purporting to be the HTC Aero

HTC has a “hero product” up its sleeves, at least according to a promise made by HTC CEO Cher Wang this past July. Based on the several leaks we’ve seen over the last couple of months from various sources, that device seems likely to be the HTC One “A9” codenamed “Hima_Aero”. Details about the phone have just been trickling in slowly, and now another tidbit has been leaked: The phone will probably ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow…

Rumored HTC One A9 could feature 10-core Helio X20 processor

htc building

Over the past few weeks, maybe even months, it’s been rumored HTC will release a new all-metal smartphone to join its lineup. The HTC One A9 is expected to take design cues from the One M-series, but so far, rumors and leaks have been less than convincing. According to a leaked screenshot, allegedly taken from Geekbench, the One A9 could feature a hugely powerful processor built by MediaTek, and feature 4GB RAM.

Although there’s still plenty of reason to be skeptical, it’s at least interesting to see these rumors crop up repeatedly about the same device. The device benchmark information shows that it has a 10-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor, the same chip found inside the recently announced Acer Predator smartphone. The chip is clocked at 1.96GHz, paired with 4GB RAM on a device which will purportedly run Android 5.1.1.

Screen Shot 2015-09-11 at 10.45.39

Twice in recent memory, an HTC event has been teased. Initially rumors predicted a September 6th event, while more recently, a September 29 unveiling was teased. With all this uncertainty surrounding the launch date, it’s worth taking any of the speculation, leaks or rumors with a healthy dose of skepticism. Early leaks were clearly faked, and there’s been a lack of any clear and reliable evidence surrounding the One A9. If today’s leak is anything to go by, a Helio chip could point towards an Asia-specific device. Having a launch event in Japan does nothing but corroborate that speculation.

HTC Mood Player lets you create a custom Spotify playlist just by taking a selfie [Hands-on]

htc-mood-player-spotify

To celebrate the launch of its mid-range Desire 626, HTC has just announced that it is collaborating with Spotify to let you create custom playlists using just a picture of your face. HTC Mood Player is a fun concept and one which I’m sure will give you at least a few minutes of fun while you interact with what is essentially just an advertisement for the Desire 626. Of course, we couldn’t let this announcement go by without taking the site for a spin…

HTC reportedly working on an Android Wear smartwatch codenamed ‘halfbeak’

According to the well-connected Derek Ross, HTC hasn’t given up yet. Although its smartphone business is struggling more than ever, the company is reportedly working on an Android Wear smartwatch to compete with the devices we just saw announced at IFA. According to Ross’ report, the device is round a la the Moto 360 and the Huawei watch, sports a resolution of 360 x 360, and is codenamed “halfbeak”…

HTC teases another press event, this time for September 29

HTC teases a phone announcement (HTC One A9?) for September 6th

HTC has come out on its official Weibo account to post a picture teasing what looks to be a smartphone of some kind. Notably, September 6th would put the announcement during IFA, so the date seems a bit more than plausibly realistic. Also, HTC has been saying since the flop that was the HTC One M9 that it is planning to try and take at least one more stab at the smartphone market…

HTC’s CEO Cher Wang having promised a new “hero product” coming in October, and most recently, images of what is purportedly an “HTC One A9” (otherwise known as “Aero”) leaked out. There’s no way to know if those images are genuine, but if they are, it’s definitely an unashamed copy of Apple’s iPhone 6. They do, however, match up with another image leaked purporting to show the A9.

I guess we’re only a few days away from knowing the truth. Here’s the tease:

HTC Desire 626 hits Verizon for $192 unlocked or $8/month

HTCVerizon Wireless has begun selling HTC’s new Desire 626 mid-range Android smartphone. HTC back in May introduced a litany of new mid-rangers to the US market across every major carrier, including the Desire 526 which hit Verizon earlier this month.

The Desire 626 is a bit of a step up from the 526, sporting a larger 5-inch, 720p display, 8MP rear-facing and 5MP front-facing cameras, 1.5GB RAM, and a quad-core Snapdragon 210 processor. It also has a 2,000mAh battery and the storage can be increased through the microSD card tray.

Those are low-end specifications when put up against today’s flagships like the Moto X Style or OnePlus Two, but they come with a price to match: $192 fully unlocked or $8 per month on a 24-month contract. And for what it’s worth, the Desire 626 is a solid-built phone with a design that is quite attractive. It’s unlikely to pull HTC out of the rut it’s in right now, though. You should check out our full video review below if you’d like to learn more about the phone.

Stagefright vulnerability fixes for HTC One M9 and M8 on AT&T now rolling out

Google may have promised to keep its Nexus devices updated once a month, and was one of the first to push fixes for the vulnerability in Stagefright, but that doesn’t mean owners of other phones will see such prompt updates. Today, weeks since Nexus devices were patched, AT&T’s HTC One M9 and M8 are receiving over-the-air updates to keep you safe when sending MMS messages.

You can find information about both the HTC One M9 update and that for the HTC One M8 over at AT&T’s website. The OTA for the M9 comes in at just 55.53 MB, while the M8 update is 28 MB. These are pretty tiny numbers for OTA updates, so you shouldn’t expect much more from this update than the patch for Stagefright. It goes without saying that it’s still important to update though.

Head over to the Settings app and mash that refresh button, or just wait until your device tells you that you’re ready to go.
