As you probably could have expected would happen eventually, Google this evening has revealed that more searches are now performed on mobile devices than on desktops. In a post on the Inside AdWords blog, Google wrote, “more Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries including the US and Japan.”
The company wouldn’t elaborate any further, so it’s unclear in what other countries mobile searches overtook desktop searches. Google does group tablets with desktops, so when it says mobile devices, it’s referring entirely to smartphones.
When you think about it, it’s entirely realistic to think that more searches occur from mobile devices than from the desktop. People always have their smartphones with them and there are a variety of apps and services that have Google search built in from the beginning.
Hopefully Google will soon share some more details regarding the breakdown of mobile searches vs desktop searches, but nevertheless, you can check out Google’s AdWords blog post here.
