Report: Google dropping ‘Nexus’ brand as future phones get more software customization

After seven generations of phones, tablets, and set-top boxes, Google is reportedly going to stop using the Nexus brand name. A new report from Android Central corroborates earlier rumors and details a move towards more software customization on upcoming devices.

There’s a possibility that the Nexus branding is not completely dead, but it will be absent on this year’s devices. The two rumored phones will come to market under a different brand name. Leaked images and renders show a consistent lack of Nexus or OEM branding and just a simple “G” logo.

The name change also coincides with “additional software and a tweaked interface” on top of Android Nougat. Rumors from Android Police point to a slightly different settings app that has live support, as well as improvements to the Ambient Display and a “Night Light” feature. Major interface changes include a Nexus Launcher that gets rid of the app drawer, search bar, and has better integration with the upcoming Google Assistant.

Many rumors point to a 5 and 5.5-inch device launching in the fall with the first Android Nougat maintenance release. Both devices are expected to share the same processor, RAM, and camera. Screen size will be the only major difference, with both devices sharing the same general metal design. Regulatory fillings show support for all major US carriers and the phones will likely be sold in carrier stores.
