Galaxy Note 6 rumored to drop microUSB, bring USB-C to Samsung’s flagship lineup

A common trend among flagship devices this year has been the introduction of USB-C, a new standard that allows a single port to convey functions such as charging and data transfer with higher speeds and power capacities, all while being conveniently reversible.

Samsung, however, has uncharacteristically remained out of the conversation — either to avoid controversy or not to cause compatibility issues with its Gear VR — and brought the Galaxy S7 (and S7 edge) to the market with an “old” microUSB connector. The Galaxy Note 6, SamMobile reports, is however looking like it’ll change things…

Based on their sources, the outlet is confident in reporting that the Galaxy Note 6 will indeed sport a shiny new USB-C port, “reversible connector and all”.

However, while it’d seem logical for Samsung to use USB 3.1, this hasn’t been confirmed yet. The newer standard is the only one capable of supporting USB Power Delivery 2.0, and thus faster charging speeds as well HDMI and Display Port video signals.

With rumors already floating around about a massive 5.8″ display, water and dust resistance, a 4000mAh battery, a monster 6GB of RAM and even the presence of an iris scanner, all we are left to wonder is whether Samsung is thinking about a new iteration of its virtual reality headset specifically built with USB-C support in mind.

While everything needs to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt, it is indeed exciting to see Samsung continuing to push technology’s boundaries to bring the latest and greatest tech to consumers.
