More details of Samsung’s Oculus-powered Gear VR headset leak w/ look at companion app

Samsung’s upcoming Gear branded virtual reality headset for its mobile devices has a leaked a couple times in recent weeks, but today it gets closer to reality with our first look at the companion software for smartphones used to manage the device. SamMobile posted screenshots of the app called Gear VR Manager that show the steps it takes for a user to setup the headset and available settings and calibration tools. There are also hints at VR Panorama and VR Cinema apps.

The help section of the app pictured in some of the screenshots above shows users how to interact with the headset including instructions for swiping gestures for navigation, speech recognition, and head movements. One screenshot for a “See-through” feature notes, “At any screen, long press back button to look outside, Use short press on back button to get back to VR world.”

The images confirm much of the site’s earlier report that showed renders of what the actual VR headset hardware will look like (below) and features like the ability to dock a device into the unit using USB. The report once again mentions that the software on the new hardware is being developed by Oculus, the VR company that Facebook recently purchased. Another report today from Cnet backs up that claim.
