The Pixel 2 features a number of customizations both big and small that express Google’s take on Android. One of the more minor design flourishes are wallpapers, with Google Design today making available the bold “Come and play” series of wallpapers for anyone to download.
Earlier this week, thanks to the famed leaker Evan Blass, we got our first real look at the Samsung Galaxy S9. Now, Blass has provided the full-size wallpaper that was seen running on the leaked handset render.
This morning’s hands-on from Ars Technica of the latest Fuchsia OS build on a Pixelbook yielded a good look at how Google’s experimental OS is progressing. From the beginning, Google+ has attracted a community of photographers who continue to share their work on the network. You may have seen those images as backdrops for your Chromecast or Fiber TV box. With a pair of new apps, Android and Mac devices will now have the ability to set those images as wallpapers and screen savers.
Google has many side initiatives, and one of them is the Cultural Institute that digitizes works of art from museums and archives around the world and puts them online.
Today, their Art Project released an app for Chrome OS that updates the wallpaper of your device to a different piece of art from their collection every day. Expect “masterpieces ranging from Van Gogh and Monet, all the way to contemporary works from street artists around the world,” according to Chrome evangelist François Beaufort in announcement post. If today’s piece doesn’t jive with your artistic taste, you can skip to the next wallpaper in the app.
The Chrome app is very similar to the Muzei Live Wallpaper app by Googler Roman Nurik that also changes the wallpaper on your phone and Android Wear watch face to a work of art. Google has this morning pushed out an update for the stable channel of Chrome OS, and as is usual, it packs a huge number of changes. But also as usual, most of these changes are under-the-hood tweaks and there are often just a few small notable changes that the end-user might notice. This update brings a new default wallpaper that sports Material Design, automatic syncing of wallpapers between devices, and a new “Emoji palette” that will allow users to quickly access Emoji.
Some highlights of these changes are:
- The default wallpaper has been updated to Material Design
- Custom wallpapers are now synced across your devices
- Emoji palette allows users to quickly access emoji
The update, specifically numbered version 40, is being pushed out as we speak. You can likely just give your Chromebook or other Chrome OS device a reboot within the next few hours to receive the update. One of HTC’s biggest selling points for its One M8 flagship is the Dot View case, and today, the company rolled out an update to the companion app with a handful of new features. The biggest change is the addition of themes for wallpapers. HTC has bundled 18 themes into the app that you can now set as the case’s wallpaper. You can also choose your own custom image, although some of them may not look quite right.
