Angry Birds 2 review: How Rovio wrecked a classic [Video]

Once upon a time there was a small Finnish game development company called Rovio. It wasn’t particularly famous, nowhere near the likes of EA Games, but then Angry Birds happened. The original title took the iOS App Store by storm before eventually landing on Android. Since those early days the brand has become one of the most recognizable brands in the world. There’s clothing, toys and even short animated shows as well as numerous movie tie-in games like Angry Birds Rio and Star Wars. What was once the popular darling of the App Store is now a digital behemoth.

Angry Birds 2 released for Android, free to download on the Play Store

angry birds 2

Rovio has finally released the long-awaited official sequel to the original Angry Birds mobile game. Since the first title saw phenomenal success on the iOS App Store, the game has gone on to amazing heights. With several official movie tie-ins, including the popular Star Wars titles, Angry Birds is the ultimate success story of the mobile app world. And now, Angry Birds 2 is available to download.

The game retains the key features, in that you fling birds with a catapult in an attempt to destroy blocks and kill green pigs. However, it does have some new features. Some levels now have multiple stages to complete, and you have to choose which bird to launch next. You can challenge other players and there are even more magic spells too, to help you complete difficult levels. As always, there are plenty of pig bosses to wipe out.

It’s free to download and has the expected in-app purchases. Download the app from the Play Store.

Angry Birds Transformers mash-up game coming soon from Rovio and Hasbro

Angry Birds Transformers

Rovio has a lot in the works. The Finnish-game maker last week released Angry Birds Epic, an RPG-style game and a first for the series, and later this year Rovio will release Angry Birds Stella led by the lady bird in the saga.

On top of all that, Rovio is announcing something they’ve been working on with Hasbro: Angry Birds Transformers. The latest title in the series will be like Angry Birds Star Wars, another Hasbro partnership for Rovio, combining the iconic gameplay with characters that resemble those from the movies.

Angry Birds Epic free-to-play RPG now available for Android

Angry-Birds-Epic-Android

A new Angry Birds game is available for Android, but this time things are a little different. Unlike previous installments in the series, Angry Birds Epic is a free-to-play turn-based RPG that places you in the heroic feathers of Red, Chuck and Bomb as they claw and squawk their way through epic battles against dastardly villains like King Pig, Wiz Pig and Prince Porky.

It’s a decent title for gamers who are new to RPGs, but things can get pretty challenging if you elect to skip its in-app purchase options for items and upgrades. That being said, Angry Birds Epic is a nice way to kill some free time and in its purest form it’ll only cost you 86MB of storage space.

Rovio teases July 15th announcement for brand new Angry Birds Star Wars game

Angry-Birds-Star-Wars-july15announcement

Last November, Rovio introduced a new Angry Birds Star Wars game that brought iconic Star Wars locations and characters from the movies into the Angry Birds gameplay universe. Today the developer is teasing what looks to be an entirely new Star Wars themed Angry Birds game. While Rovio’s initial tweet only mentioned a “Big new game announcement” coming this Monday, it later confirmed on its blog that the announcement will be for “a brand new game” with “the biggest character line-up ever, awesome new powers, and maybe even a few surprises!”

On top of the teaser, Rovio is also making Angry Birds Star Wars available for free today for a limited time.

We don’t get any other details, but Rovio did include the image above hinting the game might be inspired by Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace:

Samsung Electronics joined forces with Angry Birds maker Rovio in a partnership that will see the two companies market Samsung’s mobile devices and Rovio’s upcoming game Angry Birds Space. A new trailer released featuring Angry Birds Space on Samsung’s Galaxy Note ahead of the game’s official launch announcement on March 8. Angry Birds Space is due to hit iOS, Android, PC, and Mac on March 22.

It is interesting that Rovio also partnered with NASA for rights to use its famous Moon landing footage in an Angry Birds Space teaser (included after the break). The deal is a nice fit for the South Korean consumer electronics conglomerate that rose to become the leading Android vendor. Samsung is also looking to expand its presence in the gaming space, if a patent filing discovered by Patent Bolt is anything to go by.
