Samsung Rollable Panel Now that the “Smartphone 1.0” era is apparently coming to an end, manufacturers are rolling up their sleeves to try and figure out what comes next. Google is betting big with its Project Ara modular smartphone, but other OEMs, like Samsung, are taking a different path.

A report from Bloomberg is saying that the Korean giant may be working on two experimental devices with rollable and foldable screens, which may see the light of day as early as next year…

Foldable Galaxy Patent There’s only so many ways you can shape a rectangular slab and call it a smartphone, right? Well, the tech industry is seemingly realizing so. We have seen glimpses of more radical change with LG‘s and Samsung‘s devices in the past few years, and Google is now pushing things even forward with its modular Project Ara smartphone.

But Samsung’s ambitions are far from being stopped by the Galaxy S7 edge‘s success, and as a new patent shows (via Patently Mobile), the Korean giant is apparently bringing the whole concept a big step further…

Samsung Rollable Panel

For better or for worse, few companies manage to be as crazy as Samsung. Just a few days ago we showed you their gigantic Galaxy S7 edge-like billboard hulking amid the highways that link Moscow to one of its airports. But as it turns out, there may be some even crazier screen-related tech the Korean company wants to show off.

It may be not an 80m-tall, LED powered panel, but this rollable display (via SlashGear) certainly is a little technological marvel…

Report claims ‘LG Z’ with flexible OLED display will debut later this month

Samsung might have planned on being the first to market with a flexible OLED screen with a special edition of its Galaxy Note 3, but it looks like LG too will soon be launching its first smartphone to incorporate curved display. According to a translated report from ZD Net (via UnwiredView), LG is prepping an “LG Z” smartphone that will be the company’s first to utilize that flexible display technology it’s been working on.

We don’t get many details from the report, but it does claim that the device is already in mass production and could debut as early as this month.

It’s worth pointing out that we still don’t have any real official details on either of these curved devices from Samsung or LG, but we’re guessing the first generation of flexible display smartphones will likely sport a rather rigid casing that will make the product appear curved, opposed to actually being flexible in one’s hand.

Samsung is promising to be the first company to bring a flexible OLED screen to market in a special edition of the Galaxy Note 3 – yep, a device with a rigid case.

It’s not quite as silly as it seems: though the display won’t flex, it should be a little bit lighter and a whole lot tougher.

LG demonstrated a 5-inch flexible display back in May, but has not yet brought a flexible product to market. Apple has also patented a flexible screen, and it has often been suggested that the company plans to use one in the long-awaited iWatch.
