Opinion: LG G6 is basically a rehashed LG V20, and that makes it really boring

We showed you some more hands-on images of the LG G6 earlier today, and they got me thinking a bit more about LG’s coming MWC launch event, where the company will show us the successor to its unfortunate failure of an attempt to make modular smartphones mainstream.

In short, I can’t help but wonder why the LG G6 exists. It’s basically just a rehashed LG V20, and that makes the G6 even more boring than it would have already been if the LG V20 never existed.

There are more Galaxy Note 7s still in use than LG V20 and OnePlus 3T combined

The Galaxy Note 7 was discontinued over two months ago, but we still talk about it a lot for good reason, there are still quite a lot of them out there. Just last month Samsung confirmed that 90% of Note 7s had been taken off the market, but that last 10% is still a lot of phones. In fact, it’s so many that it still outnumbers the total sales of some other smartphones which are still available.

LG V20 Review: For spec-hungry Android enthusiasts, it’s the best Android phablet you can buy [Video]

lg_v20_hero_1

2016 has been a tough year for the Android market. In previous years we couldn’t count on one hand the number of awesome devices, but this year there have only been a few to choose from. The Galaxy S7, specifically the Edge has stood out as a clear winner, despite the praise given to competing devices like the HTC 10. On the other hand, no one really cared about LG this year. The G5 was a flop by every definition.

Now in late 2016, there still isn’t much to pick from. The Galaxy Note 7 was close to perfection, and then it literally exploded in Samsung’s face. Google’s Pixel aims to fill the void, and redefine what an Android smartphone can and should be. However, if you’re not looking to get a Pixel, the LG V20 is 100% what you should be looking at, especially if you’re aiming for a big phone. Let’s take a closer look.

LG V20 reportedly set to go on sale October 21st in the US

lg-v20

LG wasn’t very specific about the launch timeframe for the LG V20 when it announced the phone a couple of weeks ago, but now we have our first clear idea of when those in the US might actually be able to buy it. Mentioned in a report about the Galaxy Note 7 this morning from the ever-reliable Evan Blass, it appears LG is planning to make the LG V20 available on October 21st…

Samsung will reportedly resume Galaxy Note 7 sales on October 21st

galaxy_note7_verizon_2

Samsung is preparing to start replacing recalled Galaxy Note 7s here in the United States in just a couple of days, but for anyone who wants to purchase a new device, well, they still can’t. Since Samsung first announced the Note 7 recall, Samsung has had sales of the Note 7 on pause, but now VentureBeat is reporting that sales will be resuming a bit later than we expected…

Comment: In light of Samsung & Apple controversies, LG V20 might just stand a chance

lg-v20

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 7 is by far one of the best devices I’ve used this year (and I’ve used most of them), but it’s currently in a hot mess. After discovering an issue with the battery that was causing devices to explode spontaneously, Samsung was forced to issue a worldwide recall of the Note 7. While the company is in the process of replacing units, that’s not going to fully solve the problem. Customers have seen what’s been going on, and some of them are really scared about it…

lg_v20

Just last night LG finally revealed the all-new LG V20. After dropping the ball a bit on the modular LG G5, the V20 hopes to bounce back with an improved design, Android Nougat out of the box, and all of the best features from last year’s fantastic V10. As with most LG devices, the V20 will be available on most US carriers — and so far all four major carriers have confirmed availability.

Here’s everything you need to know…

Hands-on with LG’s flagship V20 [Video]

v20

LG just announced its new flagship V20, and luckily we were at IFA 2016 last week to get some early hands-on time with the device at LG’s booth. I was a fan of the — in my opinion, underrated — LG V10, but I don’t necessarily think it was the best phone of last year. This one, though, I think is going to be hard to beat — especially since the Galaxy Note 7 has been having some trouble lately…

LG announces the V20, its metal-bodied, dual-camera, premium flagship [Gallery]

If you thought that the flop that was the LG G5 was all the Korean company had in store for this year, you’re about to be surprised. The company has today announced its V20, the successor to last year’s dual-screened V10 handset and what I would call the true flagship of 2016 for LG. It’s an improved version of last year’s V10 in almost every way, and it also brings some unique features that make it stand apart not only from its predecessor, but from the entire market.

LG V20 Render

We don’t know too much about LG’s upcoming V20 flagship, but we have heard some tidbits here and there. We have a rough idea of what it’ll look like by way of renders that leaked a couple of weeks ago, we know that it’s coming in September with Android Nougat and a dual-camera system, and we know that it will have some Quad DAC audio capabilities.

Now, another teaser from LG touts that the phone will have “the best video and audio experience” on a smartphone…
