HTC says only Google Play Edition One (M7) devices will be getting Android 5.1

If you’re one of the unlucky few who’s still dependent on an old non-Google Play Edition HTC One (M7), a new Tweet today from HTC’s Mo Versi is not going to be the best news you’ve heard. According to the VP of Product Management, the One (M7) has received its last official software upgrade with the first version of Lollipop and won’t be getting Android 5.1.

That said, if you do have the Google Play Edition of the One (M7), this is great news. Not only will you be getting the update, but Versi says that it should be rolling out in early April.

In case you missed it, Wednesday was a huge HTC news day. The Taiwanese company came out to announce its Uh Oh protection plan, revealed that its M9 flagship will be hitting stores in the United States from April 10th, and Upleaks says the HTC One “M9+” should be coming out sometime in the next month or two.

Update: Mo Versi says to “Stay tuned.”

Android Lollipop now rolling out to T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

The rollout of Android Lollipop continues today, as various reports on Twitter and elsewhere have confirmed that the latest major update to Google’s mobile operating system is now hitting the HTC One (M7) for T-Mobile. A couple of days ago, HTC’s Mo Versi confirmed on Twitter that the company had received approval for the update and that it would be rolling out over-the-air on Tuesday. But now, a day early, many users are already receiving the update.

HTC announced in February that it had missed its 90-day goal for bringing Lollipop to owners of the HTC One (M7) and (M8) (with the obvious exception of the Google Play edition which got the update in early December). In mid-February, the update started rolling out to those using the HTC One (M8) on T-Mobile, and now about a month later, those who have the HTC One (M7) are seeing the update.

Android Lollipop for Google Play Edition HTC One (M8) and (M7) delayed until further notice

HTC One M8 GPE

If there is one area where iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users can exercise their bragging rights, it is with the timely and consistent software updates received from Apple. Google’s rollout of Android Lollipop has been far less predictable, with only a portion of Nexus devices having received the update and owners of devices from other manufacturers like Samsung, LG and HTC still waiting.

Leaked screenshots reveal Android Lollipop and HTC Sense running on HTC One M8

A series of screenshots have surfaced on Twitter that appear to provide a first look at Android Lollipop overlaid with HTC Sense on the HTC One (M8). Given that HTC Sense uses a similar design language as Google, the custom skin does not make Android Lollipop look overly different compared to the stock version.

If you had your heart set on picking up a Google Play edition of Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra, only to see it removed from the Play Store, then turn that frown upside down! Online retailer EXPANSYS is currently running a promotion that drastically drops the price of four US Google Play edition devices. For example, the Samsung GS4 GPE goes for $650 from Google Play, but this deal knocks it down to just $400. Not too shabby.

How to install Android L developer preview on HTC One (M7)

HTC-One-M7-Android-L-Dev-Preview

After Google made its new Android L developer preview available to Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 last month, it wasn’t long before we saw an unofficial port to other devices. First we got the Nexus 4, and now a user at the xda-developers forums was able to get the developer preview up and running on an HTC One (M7).

Not many expected to see a HTC One (M7) port, but XDA Senior Member ssrij and a team of developers managed to port the Android L Developer Preview to this former flagship device… The port is still in alpha stage, and some things simply don’t work. Running Android L on first generation HTC One was made possible thanks to ramdisk and kernel modifications, so it might not run as it should. However, the Developer Preview was made to show people how the Android L will look like and what functions we should be expected.

You can expect lots of stuff not to work at the moment, including: WiFi, Bluetooth, data, camera, and sound, but the developers are working to fix some of the issues with the initial alpha release for the M7. More info on the original forum post here.

Android 4.4.3 rolling out to Google Play edition HTC One (M7) and Samsung Galaxy S4

Android-Google-Play-Edition

The Android 4.4.3 train has no signs of slowing down. After hitting several Nexus devices and Motorola announcing its release schedule earlier today, the Google Play editions of the Galaxy S4 and HTC One (M7) are joining in on the fun. Owners of these special edition handsets are slowly but surely receiving an over-the-air update that moves their device to Android 4.4.3.
