Apple and Google team up to bring AirTag-like unwanted tracking alerts to all item trackers on iPhone and Android

Apple has announced a major new partnership with Google today to lead an “industry specification to address unwanted tracking.” Through the partnership, Apple and Google will create a “draft specification” to alert users about possible unwanted tracking by AirTags and other Bluetooth item trackers.

Following in the footsteps of Tile and Samsung’s new Galaxy Tag, Apple unveiled its AirTag tracker this week for keeping track of your keys, wallet, or whatever else you want to attach the $29 device to. You’d be correct in assuming these are designed to work with iPhones, but Apple did include the tiniest bit of functionality for AirTags with Android.

After numerous rumors, Apple finally introduced AirTag during today’s special event. Apple’s item tracker works based on the ultra-wideband U1 chip and relies on the Find My network to work even offline. However, an interesting detail that wasn’t mentioned during the keynote is that even Android users can identify an AirTag in Lost Mode.
