Huawei announces Android Wear 2.0-powered Huawei Watch 2 and Watch 2 Classic

Huawei has today announced the Huawei Watch 2, its followup to the largely-successful Huawei Watch which originally launched in 2015. But the Chinese company is actually launching two successors to the Huatch today: a sportier model with silicone straps and LTE, and a “Classic” model that will serve the crowd looking for something more like its predecessor…

The watches are almost identical on paper, both featuring a 1.2-inch display coming in at a resolution of 390 x 390. They both pack Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor (which has become pretty common in Android Wear watches), and they’re both powered by 420mAh batteries. Contrary to the norm of 4GB of storage we’ve often seen in Android Wear, these watches curiously ship with just 2GB of on-board storage. As for size, they both have 45mm watch casings, 3mm larger than the original.

But as you can see in the image above, the Classic looks noticeably classier than the sport models on either side of it. As mentioned, this model also goes without the LTE radio of the sport model, but will likely get better battery life as a result. Both watches have interchangeable straps, but third-party straps are definitely going to look nicer on the Classic.

Most of the other features you’ve come to expect from a modern Android Wear watch — many of which recently debuted with the LG Watch Style and LG Watch Sport — are also present with both of these watches. They both have heart rate sensors, they both have NFC for Android Pay, and they both have GPS and IP68 water resistance. While they don’t have rotating crowns like the new LG watches, they do feature the same Android Wear 2.0 and a pair of hardware buttons.

Unfortunately, Huawei hasn’t yet announced any availability or pricing details for these watches, but we should know soon enough.

We’ll have our hands on these and more information to share soon…
