If these images are real, Meizu could be on its way to out-Xiaomi the edgeless Mi Mix [Gallery]

With the Mi Mix, there is no doubt that Xiaomi has done something outstanding — and, considering today’s general standards, quite futuristic, too. But, if that’s the direction we’re heading towards, it will become increasingly more natural for us to expect the various OEMs to up the ante in the race to the truly bezel-less smartphone.

And Meizu could be next…

Thanks to a Weibo post, in fact, we now have a series of images that show us what seems to be the concept of an upcoming smartphone from the firm, which sports a quasi-completely frame-free design; for all its potential engineering prowess, however, it looks remarkably simple: there’s nothing other than the ostensibly metallic frame surrounding the display — the size of which, much like any other spec, is unknown.

There are no cutouts for the sensors, a home button, or, much more suspiciously, a front camera. As per the former components, a piezoelectric driver could do the job, much like on the Mi Mix — and Qualcomm has an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner technology ready, were the reader not positioned on the unseen device’s rear — but we’re not ready to believe that Meizu could have implemented a somewhat hidden, transparent front camera just yet.

There is not much in addition to the pictures, save for an additional Meizu-branded slide that states “something unexpected is coming”, with an odd December 24 date. Given that we’re talking a day before Christmas (and a Saturday), it does seem weird indeed, but we will have to wait and see what the Chinese firm has up its sleeve.

For now, all we can do is redirect you to the images down here. Do you like where phone design is going, or do you still think that there should be a (literal) space for some thumb-resting bezel? Let us know in the comments below.
