Samsung denied a Note 7 customer a Gear VR refund because ‘it works with other devices’

Samsung still has a lot of work in front of it with the Galaxy Note 7 recall, but if it lives up to its promises, the company may just salvage its reputation. However, things aren’t going to go perfectly in every case…

Backing up just a bit, Samsung stated that it would be giving refunds for any Note 7 accessories customers may have purchased. That includes the revised Gear VR headset which Reddit user Agolightly ran into some trouble while trying to return.

He states that he purchased the Note 7 at launch and ordered the headset directly from Samsung shortly after. After using the headset twice, Samsung announced the first recall which triggered the user to stop using the accessory which “strapped a bomb to his face” and replaced his Note 7 at his local AT&T store. Now that Samsung has again recalled and discontinued the device, the user wanted to return his Note 7, and hadn’t planned on buying another Samsung flagship.

Logically, he wanted to return the Gear VR headset, but after getting in touch with Samsung to do so, his request for a refund was denied. A Samsung representative stated that this was because “it is supported by other Samsung devices, and is outside of the 30-day return window.”

Venting his frustration, the user notes that he would’ve been in the return window if Samsung hadn’t replaced his Note 7 with another defective unit. He further says that he doesn’t want $100 toward another Samsung device, but simply wants the $100 back from the Gear VR headset.

Hopefully this is an unusual case; it would be in Samsung’s best interest to make it right.
