Samsung rumored to go dual-edge only for its forthcoming Galaxy S8 flagship

When the Galaxy S6 came out, Samsung introduced us to a somewhat weird and yet inspiring, sexy-looking sibling, the Galaxy S6 edge, which managed to catch the eye but failed to make a case for the very essence of its curved display. However, as the company pushed forward with the development of dual-edge equipped flagships, popularity started to increase, so much so that the company may go down that road only for its next flagship

A report from the oft-reliable Korea Herald is in fact stating that Samsung has indeed settled on designing its next highest-end device with a curved screen only, with two models at 5.1 and 5.5 inches. These are the same screen sizes of this year’s Galaxy S7s; however, only the aptly named Galaxy S7 edge sports the rounded-edge screen, whereas the “standard” Galaxy S7 has a regular flat panel.

After pushing the Galaxy Note 7 to the market as just one, dual-edge device, however, the move shouldn’t come as a surprise. After all, while the curve does not indeed bring any immediate advantage — save for software features, like the Edge Panel, which would work just fine on a flat display — the subtlety of the curvature doesn’t really compromise the phone or the user experience in any way, either.

The only question that would remain is in regards to naming; we’ve come to expect a “Sx” and a “Sx edge” model of Samsung’s mainstream flagship phone, but that wouldn’t make much sense in a scenario that sees both models sporting the curved panel; and unless Samsung plans to pull an Apple and significantly differentiate the two, chances are we will see a Galaxy S8 and a Galaxy S8 “Plus” — just like 2015’s Galaxy S6 edge and S6 edge+, minus the now-unnecessary “edge” in the title.

Of course this is pure speculation, but it’s likely the simplest route the Korean firm could go for. Do you like the idea? What are your thoughts on the naming? And are you excited to see what Samsung will bring to the table for its top smartphone next year? Let us know in the comments below.
