Huawei’s Honor 5C budget phone is coming to Europe this week for just £149

At CES earlier this year, Huawei’s budget brand Honor launched its budget Honor 5X handset. Us and many others agree that the 5X is a great phone for the price, but suffers greatly in the software department. Now, Honor has announced a similarly-affordable phone dubbed the Honor 5C in Europe, and it starts at £149 (or about $220)…

It’s definitely a trend with Honor’s phones, and budget Android handsets from Chinese OEMs in general. With the Honor 5C, you’re getting a lot of great specs for a super-low price. The 5C sports a 5.2-inch full HD IPS display, Huawei’s in-house Hisilicon Kirin 650, 2GB of RAM, and a 3,000 mAh battery. The phone’s cameras are pretty good for this price range, coming in at 13MP for the main rear camera (which also has HDR), and 8MP for the front-facing selfie shooter. The phone comes with 16GB of onboard storage to store all those shots, which is expandable up to 128GB via microSD slot.

Unfortunately, the Honor 5C will launch in Europe without a fingerprint sensor — a sacrifice likely taken as an attempt to hit the phone’s low price point. It’s unfortunate that this key feature is missing though; the Chinese version of the phone includes the fingerprint sensor and the barely-more-expensive Honor 5x does too.

As for software, the Honor 5C sports EMUI 4.1 based on Android Marshmallow. It’s not going to be the prettiest software ever, but it’s at least better than the buggy mess that launched with the Honor 5X. Huawei is constantly upgrading its software, however, so I wouldn’t necessarily say that less-than-ideal EMUI is a reason not to buy.

Check out the video below, and head over to Honor’s website to grab the phone in gold, silver, and grey. There’s no word on a United States launch, but Honor has more phones on the way later this year.
