Google Fonts just got a huge Material Design overhaul, and it’s beautiful [Video]

Google has today completely revamped its longstanding Google Fonts website with Material Design, making it easier — and more beautiful —  than ever to browse and try out the site’s huge collection of open source designer fonts. The old Fonts site — which first launched in 2010 — was practically begging to be reborn, and today Google delivered…

If you head over to the Google Fonts homepage you’ll find a directory of some popular font families, and now it’s super easy to see what they might look like on your website. You can drag a slider to change the font size in a snap, easily view the several available weights for each font, and select fonts for easy access to embed codes. It’s also now easier than ever to try out the various fonts; all you have to do is start typing.

Here’s what Google has to say about the redesign:

Today, Google fonts are viewed on the web over 15 billion times a day in over 135 languages worldwide. Over the last six years, the team has continued to commission new fonts, adding dimension and range to the directory. Now, Google Fonts is taking its commitment to design one step further with an updated directory—one that showcases typography and type designers while making fonts easy to explore and use. Using the Material Design framework, we created a design that scales across different screen sizes and devices, and updated the entire look and feel of the site, from the overall interactivity all the way down to the logo design.

If you click in to see any one Font specimen, you’ll find a newly-redesigned page with a detailed look at every character in that font, who designed the font, a brief description of the font, the number of times Google Fonts API serves the font, and its usage around the world. Roboto, for instance, has been served 20 billion times in the last week, is featured on almost 9 million websites, and is most popular in the United States.

Head over to Google Fonts to check it out for yourself, and let us know what you think in the comments.
