Most of the new features added to Inbox by Gmail usually only apply to the mobile apps. In the past two years, the web app has received legacy features from Gmail and is on par with Android and iOS in key functionality. A minor update today adds more rich text formatting options to the web.
While people increasingly work on the go, it is still much easier to format text with a real keyboard and mouse. Starting today, Inbox users will see a panel at the bottom of the compose window to choose different fonts and change the color and size of text. Previously, users could only bold, italicize, and underline.
Like on Gmail, there are only 11 fonts and four size presets. Users can only change the text color and not the background color in order to highlight. Fortunately, the formatting options are always showing and do not require users to press an option in order to open up a toolbar.
The last major update to Inbox added a newsletter summarizing feature and a Chrome extension to save links to read later. An update to the web interface in March finally added the “Smart Reply” feature previously found on mobile. Today’s rich text formating update should be live for all users.
