Sketchy report mentions Galaxy Note 7 edge could sport a dual camera setup

Among the common trends that seem to be picking up in mobile photography, we can certainly include the adoption of dual cameras: brands like LG and Huawei — with the G5 and P9 respectively — have in fact already brought dual-camera equipped, high-end terminals to the mainstream market.

Now, following numerous reports of Apple allegedly looking forward to entering the game, Samsung seems willing to join the part as well (via Pocket-Lint)…

A somewhat sketchy report from China’s Zol makes it look like the wait won’t be long either.

Apparently, other than confirming that Samsung is indeed working on the technology internally at Semco (Samsung Electro-Mechanics), the report says that a commercially viable unit could be ready as soon as the end of summer.

And what better device to announce Samsung’s next step in smartphone camera evolutions than the sequel to America’s most beloved phone?

The Galaxy S7 edge may already sport an industry-leading camera, but the Galaxy Note 6 — or perhaps Note 7 edge, as per recent rumors — will certainly be able to step the game up again, potentially even introducing an iris scanner on the front facing shooter.

There is no mention of what the second eye may be used for, but the above-mentioned devices could give us an idea; the P9’s dual system, for instance, is used to capture both a “regular” as well as a monochrome shot, to combine the results for better accuracy and color reproduction.

The G5 utilizes its second lens to offer the user a much wider angle, making the 8MP shooter capable of taking dramatic 135 degrees shots (the human eye, for comparison, captures between 120 a 124 degrees worth of field of view).

Back in 2014, HTC too put a second lens in its One M8, and while the end results may have not been spectacular, the idea of capturing depth data — essentially tweaking the depth of field — had indeed some potential.

Apple, too, has seemingly really big ambitions for the iPhone 7‘s implementation of a dual camera system, with rumors (and patents) talking about two different focal lengths to switch between, as well as simultaneous video and photo shooting, among other things.

Either way, expect to see a monster of a phone — be it with a flat or curved screen, chances are we will see a QHD AMOLED panel, either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 823 or an Exynos 8890 processor, a whopping 6GB of RAM, a battery up to 4000mAh and more.
