Moto Z registered as trademark with possible announcement at June 9th event

The only confirmed launch from Lenovo’s Tech World event on June 9th is a consumer Project Tango-enabled smartphone. An invite from the reliable MotoHK now also points to a reveal of the next Moto flagship at the event. Furthermore, the Moto Z trademark has just passed (via Droid Life) the US Patent Office.

On May 17th, Motorola Trademark Holdings filed a “MOTO Z” trademark for use on “Mobile phones, smartphones and accessories therefore, namely battery chargers and adapters.” The Moto Z branding lines up with a previous report that detailed Lenovo transitioning away from the Moto X line for upcoming flagship devices.

The leaked invite shows an outline of the Moto Z that matches up with previously leaked renders. Antenna lines and the circular camera hub are clearly visible, as is the Moto ‘batwing’ logo and buttons on the side. The previously raised camera module might not be as big a deal due to the interchangeable back modular plates that will add extra functionality and even out the rear.

Two models are expected to be announced. A higher-end Moto Z Style uses a Snapdragon 820 processor and a quad HD 5.5-inch display. Meanwhile, the lower end Moto Z Play will only have a full HD screen and a Snapdragon 620 processor.
