Acer announces Liquid Jade 2 smartphone at MWC w/ 1TB ‘hybrid’ storage

As part of its Mobile World Congress announcements this week, Acer today announced the Acer Liquid Jade 2, the latest in the company’s lineup of flagship Liquid Jade branded smartphones.

The standout upgrades of the new device, according to Acer, include a new 21MP camera, configurations that include up to 1TB of storage space, and, of course, the Liquid Jade design language of the device with its 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED and Corning’s 2.5D Gorilla Glass:

The Acer Liquid Jade 2 features Acer’s award-winning Liquid Jade design language with a sleek and slim profile, curved back cover that fits comfortably in the hand and ergonomic 2.5D Corning® Gorilla® Glass screen. The hairline brushed iron-grey back cover is finished with a metallic touch and joined to the screen with a bold red silhouette highlight… The 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED screen on the Liquid Jade 2 produces vibrant and crisp images and supports the full NTSC color gamut for true-to-life colors. The screen also features Zero Air Gap technology for improved readability under sunlight and on-cell touch technology for a slimmer profile.

The company also highlighted improved audio features — high-resolution audio featuring DTS® Headphone:X technology — but perhaps the most interesting new feature of the device is that 1TB of hybrid storage.

Here’s how it works. Acer is using its technology to merge the 32GB of memory in the device with cloud storage to give users up to 1TB to use for installing apps, storing music and video, and anything else you’d normally store entirely locally. The company doesn’t offer a ton of information on exactly what that means from a user experience perspective, but it said “users can install apps, store and access music, photos, and video collections easily with their favorite apps.”

Other specs include a 21MP main camera with phase-detection autofocus, a dual-LED flash, support for up to 4K (3840 x 2160) video recording, and a new “professional camera mode” with advanced controls for things like white balance, ISO, and more. You’ll also find a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 32GB of storage, and 3GB of RAM.

No pricing or availability yet, but we’ll keep you posted when we hear more.
