DROID Ultra, Maxx, & Mini not getting Lollipop, Moto offering discounts on a new phone instead

The DROID Ultra, Maxx, and Mini were announced just days before the first Moto X, and now Motorola is reneging on an early promise to provide Android 5.1 to those devices. As consolation, however, they are offering owners a discount on the Droid Turbo 2 or Maxx 2.

These three DROID devices had many features now found in the Moto X, G, and E line. Their early announcement gave us a sneak peak into many Moto X features like always-on hotword detection, ambient display, and Moto’s various smart assistants. They were great phones, but it looks like they have now met the end of their software upgrade life.

The skin-free Moto X received Lollipop long ago, but not without a significant delay and a wait for Lollipop 5.1. In a sense, it’s understandable why Lenovo wouldn’t want to commit to software efforts for these devices, but it’s still unfortunate that they did not even get two years of updates.

Fortunately, Motorola will provide owners of these three phones phone a $100 discount on the Turbo 2 and $50 off the Maxx 2. The offer expires on May 19 and the promo codes must be used by June 2. Owners will need to enter their IMEI and mobile phone number or serial number to see if they qualify. We gave the Turbo 2 and Maxx 2 high marks for their hardware during our review.
