Freedom 251 is a 4-inch Android smartphone with quad-core processor that costs less than $4

A smartphone has been announced in India which, unbelievably, costs the equivalent of just $3.66 USD. The Freedom 251 by Ringing Bell is an Android 5.1-powered smartphone with a 4-inch screen, and it’ll be available to order from tomorrow, Feb. 18. At this price, we’re pretty certain this is the cheapest smartphone available anywhere in the world.

The phone, priced at 251 Indian Rupees, boasts a 4-inch display with a qHD resolution IPS panel (960 x 540) as well as 1GB RAM paired with a 1.3GHz quad-core processor. It’s also equipped with 8GB internal storage, which can be expanded by MicroSD card up to an extra 32GB.

As well as a 1,450mAh battery, there’s a 3.2MP main camera and a 0.3MP front camera. As a bonus, it even has 3G connectivity and a 1 year warranty. Not bad for a phone that costs the same amount as a tall Caramel Macchiato.

In its ‘about us’ page, Ringing Bell describes itself as one of the fastest growing smartphone makers in India, and says the Freedom 251 has ‘best in-class features’. While we doubt that, we can’t think of a single phone which comes even slightly close to the $4 price point of the device, and if there is one, it’s almost certainly not a 4-inch touchscreen smartphone with Android onboard. It’s more likely to be an old-school ‘dumb’ phone.
