Google’s Ubiquity dev summit schedule mysteriously mentions a product called ‘Living Room’

Update: A Googler from the event says that this was a typo—someone did a find/replace and accidentally replaced the word “Android TV” with “Living Room”. There is no product called “Living Room”.

Google’s Ubiquity developer summit is scheduled to kick off later today, but the event’s schedule of events is already available for your perusing. After a quick perusal ourselves (tipped off via Reddit), we noticed that the schedule (as Google I/O schedules have in the past) reveals a Google product we haven’t yet heard about. It’s called “Living Room,” and it’s mentioned on the schedule as a consumer product alongside Chromecast…

Here are a few quotes from the schedule that mention this new product:

“Go where your users are: the living room! With Living Room and the Leanback library, you easily can add a big screen, cinematic experience to your app.”

“The more challenging it is to get design/implementation right, the more potential you have to win in the space. Why consumer products like Living Room & Chromecast offer a very real chance to define new game markets through superior implementation considering system constraints.”

“Bring your questions to a casual chat with our Living Room & Chromecast experts.”

Perhaps most interestingly, mentions of this product occur on the schedule in lieu of an Android TV mention. Google’s other Android-branded platforms all appear at least once; Android Auto, Android Wear, and just regular ol’ mobile Android all get mentions. Knowing Google’s past it wouldn’t be hard to believe that the company is simply throwing new branding on Android TV, but one can hope that they aren’t, right?

Once Google TV, Android TV is Google’s attempt beyond Chromecast to bring not just casted streaming services and games, but a full-fledged Android experience to your TV. It’s much more of a direct competitor to the Apple TV platform, but it’s definitely much less popular than Chromecast. Considering Google is coupling “Living Room & Chromecast” together in these event listings, the evidence for moving past the Android TV name is definitely there.

I guess we’ll find out very soon what exactly “Living Room” is, if not just a new name for Android TV.
