Accelerated Mobile Pages Project gains more partners, late February 2016 launch

The Accelerated Mobile Pages Project is gaining more traction as more than just publications are announcing their support to the open source project to speed up and improve mobile web pages. Many, including Google, are beginning to announce when users should begin to see AMP pages in day-to-day use.

Google Search will begin sending traffic to AMP pages on mobile in late February of next year. Messaging apps like LINE, Viber, and Tango will begin linking to AMP content in early 2016. Twitter will begin experimenting linking to AMP pages provided by publishers by then. WordPress will support sites that wish to enable AMP pages beginning in January.

Meanwhile, testing done by Pinterest has shown AMP pages load four times faster and use eight times less data than traditional mobile sites. On the development side, work continues on improving the ad and analytic experience for publishers. AMP is working on adding support for sites that have paywalls and require a login. They are also working on allowing more page customizations, including click to play videos and optimized content embeds.

The amount of industry cooperation on AMP will undoubtedly ensure that early next year the next webpage you see on your phone will be an AMP one. Fortunately, this move is good for users, as well as for the online media industry.
