Samsung working on super-efficient 6GB LPDDR4 RAM chips for next-gen smartphones, tablets and PCs

In a blog post this morning, Samsung has announced that it is mass producing the world’s first 12gigabit (not to be confused with gigabyte/GB) LPDDR4 mobile RAM. It’s based on the company’s impressive 20-nanometer process tech and will enable the company to make higher capacity, faster, more powerful chips that fit into the same space as the current crop of flagship RAM modules…

Samsung states that these new, tiny 12gb LPDDR4 components are more than 30 percent faster than the current 8 gigabit modules, capable of running at 4,266Mbps. But they’re not just faster, they’re more energy efficient too, saving precious mobile battery life and enabling them to be used in much smaller devices and products. Modules will be used in combination, enabling the company to package 6GB RAM in to a space that the current 3GB RAM fits in to. They’ll also be able to make 3GB RAM packages that take up half the space of current 8 gigabit 3GB modules. :

The 12Gb LPDDR4 enables 3 gigabyte (GB) or 6GB of mobile DRAM in a single package using just two chips and four chips respectively, while being the only solution that can provide a 6GB LPDDR4 package. In next-generation flagship devices, 6GB of LPDDR4 mobile DRAM will allow consumers to enjoy seamless multitasking and maximum performance within the latest operating system (OS) environments. Also, based on the new 12Gb LPDDR4, the 6GB package can easily fit into the same space used for 3GB LPDDR4 packages currently available, therefore meeting the need for greater design compatibility and manufacturing productivity in advanced mobile devices.

Samsung notes that while it intends to use these chips in the next generation of smartphones, it’s going to expand their use far beyond just mobiles. The company is moving past phones and tablets and will start using these impressive chips inside ultra-slim PCs, digital appliances and automative devices over the next few years. We should then be thinking about products like smart, connected kitchen gadgets, and virtually anything else IOT-based in our homes.

The company doesn’t state as much officially, but it’s probably safe to assume that next year’s Galaxy Note series will have a 6GB Exynos processor, using this advanced 12-gigabit, 20nm technology. We’d be very surprised if Samsung didn’t choose to use its next flagships to showcase its market-leading processor technology.
