PSA: ‘Moto X Style’ is simply ‘Moto X Pure Edition’ in the US

Motorola announced two new Moto X variants this morning, but the company didn’t do a great job of clarifying in its multi-national livestream exactly how the phones would be marketed in the United States. First, as we mentioned, there aren’t any plans to bring the Moto X Play to the US at all at this point. But secondly, and perhaps more confusingly, the Moto X Style isn’t really coming to the US, either. In the United States, the equivalent of the Moto X Style will simply be called “Moto X Pure Edition”.

It’s really a confusing mess. As you may know, the previous Moto X (2014) was also available in “Pure Edition” form, which simply meant that it would have Motorola’s stock Android experience and absolutely no carrier bloatware. Now, the 2015 Moto X is simply being referred to as the Moto X Pure Edition, with no word on any carrier availability at all. That said, it does have “universal banding,” so you can use it on any US carrier. I’m assuming this will mean that we wont’ be seeing the “Pure Edition” in carrier stores.

If the Moto X Pure Edition ever does come to carriers in the US, I would assume Motorola will then use the “Moto X Style” branding (or, perhaps, just Moto X (2015)). For now, though, it looks like the Moto X Pure Edition can be purchased from Motorola’s website starting at some point later this year, and it’s going to start at $399.99.
