Apparent model number for Samsung Galaxy Note 5 appears on company’s website

We’ve been reporting on rumors surrounding Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 5, the South Korean manufacturer’s upgraded prosumer, phablet-sized smartphone, on-and-off for the past few months. Now we’re seeing something on the company’s website that leads us to believe the phone is nearing a public unveiling and release.

First spotted by SamMobile, a blog which follows Samsung closely, a support page on the company’s website addressing concerns regarding off-center front-facing camera’s in Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge units includes two mysterious letter-number combinations, N925 and N920f, which are formatted like Samsung Galaxy Note model numbers, alongside mention of the aforementioned phones in the title of the page (click here to view the HTML). The page itself has a timestamp indicating that it was last updated on May 5th, and a cached version of the page from Google shows these two ostensible model numbers having been there as of last week, so it seems likely they’ve been there for some time now.

While there’s no other indication on the support page as to what these letter-number combinations reference exactly, they do line up closely with the model number pattern taken with previous Galaxy Note phones. The model number of the Galaxy Note 4 differs for each variant by region and carrier, but are generally formatted as SM-N910 with another letter or number appended at the end – specifically, appended letters usually signify the different SoC’s (system on a chip) used across the variants. The Note 3 model numbers began in SM-N900.

Since there are not one but two mysterious model numbers here, it’s hard to say exactly what N925 could be signifying, but it seems possible that it would be a curved-edge variant, like the original Galaxy Note Edge released at the end of last year. My only doubt here is that the original Note Edge had a model number of N915X – so, N925 would follow a linear numerical bump but doesn’t include any alphabetical signifier at the end. Things get even more confusing when you consider that Samsung is rumored to also be releasing a larger-screened variant of the flagship Galaxy S6 Edge, to be called the “Galaxy S6 Edge Plus.” That would have the lineup seeing its differentiating factors get ever smaller, which we tried to wrap our heads around in a previous post.

Finally, the Note 5 is expected to sport a 5.67-inch Super AMOLED QHD display, an Exynos 7422 SoC with 64-bit CPU, 4GB RAM, and, as always, the traditional S-Pen stylus and associated software. And even though this rumor has been refuted by a Samsung executive, the rumor mill currently has the Note 5’s launch pegged for August rather than the model’s usual September debut at IFA Berlin.
