Android One launching in the Philippines w/ Cherry Mobile & MyPhone Android 5.1 devices

Google this morning has revealed that it is expanding its Android One initiative to the Philippines. The company announced on its Asia Pacific blog that two affordable Android devices from Cherry Mobile and MyPhone will be available in the coming weeks. Android One was originally unveiled at Google I/O last year and is the company’s attempt at bringing Android devices to countries at affordable price points. The Philippines is the sixth country in which Android One is available.

Specs of the MyPhone Uno and Cherry One are nearly identical. Both devices have 4.5-inch 854×480 displays and are powered by 1GB of RAM coupled with a quad-core Mediatek processor. They offer 3G connectivity and 5MP rear facing cameras and 2MP front cameras. The devices also both ship with Android 5.1, something that is not yet available for anyone else. Android 5.1 was revealed earlier this month and includes minor enhancements.

Google touts that these devices will also include features like Chrome browser data compression and YouTube offline. The company hopes that these efforts will reduce data consumption on the devices. Carriers in the Philippines will also offer promotional plans to people who buy Android One devices.

Earlier this month, Android One expanded to Indonesia with three new devices. Again, Android One will launch in the Philippines in the coming weeks with devices from MyPhone and Cherry Mobile.
