Samsung reportedly working on new tablets with 4:3 aspect ratios

According to a new report out of the usually reliable SamMobile, Samsung is working on handful of new tablets with a 4:3 aspect ratio, similar to what is found on Apple’s iPad and the Nexus 9. The company is reportedly working on four new tablets, the SM-T35x/SM-T55x and the SM-P35x/SM-P55x. The former of those pairs will have 8-inch displays, while the latter will have 9.7-inch panels.

All four of the tablets will allegedly be powered by a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor. The SM-T35x and the SM-T55x models are expected to be successors to the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 and Galaxy Tab 4 10.1, respectively. The SM-P35 and SM-P55x are suspected to be new mid-range models in the Galaxy Note lineup of tablets.

Google’s 4:3 Nexus 9 tablet received mixed thoughts from reviewers. The 4:3 aspect ratio was praised for making the device more manageable for use in both portrait and landscape modes, but many did not like the letter-boxing treatment that 16:9 content was given. All of Apple’s iPads have shipped with 4:3 aspect ratios, however.

SamMobile notes that Samsung is not very far along in the development process of these tablets and says we shouldn’t expect an unveiling at Mobile World Congress next month. Instead, the company is reportedly looking at a Q2 or Q3 2015 launch.
