Dell Venue 8 7000 Android-powered tablet now available for $400, includes ‘infinity display’ and ‘world’s thinnest’ design

Dell announced today at CES 2015 that its Venue 8 7000 Android-powered tablet is now available. The device—originally announced back in September at an Intel event—costs $400 and is available now in the US from Dell.com and Best Buy stores. It will launch in Canada later this week and in Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, India, Germany and the UK during early 2015.

The Dell Venue 8 7000 is “the world’s thinnest tablet,” according to the company, coming in at just 6mm. Dell also touts that the device features an “infinity display” with very little side bezel, making the display nearly edge-to-edge. The 8.4-inch display comes with a QHD 2560 x 1600 resolution, as well.

The device also features an 8MP rear-facing camera and two 720p stereoscopic sensors below it that are part of Intel’s new RealSense Snapshot Depth Camera. This technology captures a depth map for every picture taken, and together with Dell’s built-in Gallery application, gives users a great amount of flexibility in the post-editing of their photos.

On the inside, the Dell Venue 8 7000 is powered by a 2.3GHz Intel Atom quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM. For $400, you get 16GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot for expandability. The $400 model is WiFi only, although Dell promises an LTE model in the coming months. Finally, the device ships with Android 4.4 KitKat, but Dell tells The Verge that an update is imminent.

Again, the Dell Venue 8 7000 is available now via Dell.com and Best Buy in the United States. The device will come to Canada later this week and more countries as 2015 progresses.

Dell Venue 8 7000 Series: Innovative design, groundbreaking features

The Venue 8 7000 Series, first unveiled at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) last September, is now available for purchase on Dell.com in the United States and in select Best Buy stores across the country. The much-anticipatedtablet features a series of ‘firsts.’ Based on the Intel® AtomTM processor Z3500 series, it is the world’s thinnest tablet at 6mm, and it features the best tablet display available today, a stunning 2560×1600 OLED infinity edge-to-edge display.

The Venue 8 7000 Series is also the first to integrate the Intel RealSense Snapshot Depth Camera, which captures a depth map for every picture taken. Together with the Dell Gallery application, people will have much more flexibility when editing photos with selective filtering and refocus functions to change the brightness separately on a foreground object or background object, or refocus on any part of the picture. In addition, customers will be able to do simple linear or area measurements with a photo, like measure the length of a sofa or the area of a room. The Dell Gallery also organizes photos into smart albums and gathers photos from Dropbox, Picasa and Facebook into one place. They are then sorted automatically into smart albums by timeline, geography or facial recognition. One of the most exciting and innovative devices Dell has ever produced, it is fitting that the Venue 8 7000 is recognized as a 2015 CES Innovation Award Best of Innovation Honoree.

“The new Dell Venue 8 7000 is the perfect tool for an artist as it combines beautiful, thin design with the performance and features to showcase my work in the best light,” said Aerosyn-Lex Mestrovic, visual artist. “With the rich and saturated colors of the eye-popping OLED infinity edge-to-edge screen and more than 4M pixels, I can now accurately show the details of my work while meeting with clients, collectors and collaborators whilst traveling. I also see a ton of opportunity to utilize the 3D editing and measurement tools for my installation projects, such as the works I’ve created for installation at The MoMA or for the SCOPE art fair at Miami Art Basel.”
