Reddit could be working on official Android app as it hires mobile engineer

Reddit has hired seven people to join its growing team, among them David Forsythe, a mobile engineer that specializes on Android. The hiring is further evidence that an official Android app for Reddit could be on the horizon, following the company’s acquisition of Alien Blue for iPhone and subsequent rebranding of the app as its official iOS client.

Forsythe did not directly confirm that he will be working on an Android app, although he cites experience building things like web apps and mobile apps in the past. Despite being one of the most highly-trafficked websites online, Reddit surprisingly still lacks a mobile-friendly website for smartphones and tablets.

“I’m the new Android engineer at reddit and I’m super excited about it,” wrote Forsythe. “I can’t wait to make Android the best platform for a mobile reddit experience. Over the last few years I’ve worked on things like package managers, infrastructure, web apps, and mobile apps.”

Reddit confirmed in April that it was working on improving its mobile experience by hiring developers to “build and maintain apps” that promote the website’s content and help it gain it a larger audience. It has delivered on that promise for iPhone users through its Alien Blue purchase and releasing an official AMA app, but it has yet to release an official Android app.

“The world is going mobile, and so is reddit,” wrote Reddit HR generalist Nicole-Jasmin Clark in a post on /r/forhire. “We’re hiring developers to help us build and maintain apps to highlight great content from reddit for a broader, global audience. Our focus is on making it easier for people to find great content on reddit through mobile apps, clean design and machine learning.”

Reddit is one of the most popular websites on the internet, serving as an online discussion board for a wide variety of topics. The so-called “front page of the internet” is broken down into several categories called “subreddits” that allow for users to post messages, images and videos about topics such as science, technology, religion, funny pictures, videos, sports and more.

In the meantime, Android users can find several quality third-party Reddit apps on the Play Store such as Reddit News and Reddit Sync.
