Samsung being sued over the name of its Milk Music app

A photography and multimedia company by the name of Milk Studios filed a lawsuit against Samsung earlier this week, claiming the South Korean technology firm had violated its trademark with the name of its music streaming service. Filed in the US District Court of the Southern District of New York, the company says that Samsung “intentionally, willfully and knowingly” used the Milk name for its music service called Milk Music which launched last spring for Galaxy device users.

Not exactly a fly-by-night organization, Milk Studios has been operating out of Los Angeles and New York for over 15 years. The company’s filings didn’t specify the value of its lawsuit, however it did reference its previous working relationship with Samsung. The companies started working together in 2006 and have collaborated around 20 times.

The studio claims that its previous ventures with Samsung provided the tech company with “personal knowledge” of its brand. The outfit says it asked the Korean electronics maker to stop using the Milk name in March when it launched its music streaming service, but five months later Samsung refused to do so.

Samsung has yet to comment on this lawsuit and the company recently launched Milk Video, a service dedicated to helping people find popular viral videos.
