The latest Android distribution numbers for a seven-day period ending November 3rd reveal that KitKat is installed on 30.2% of devices that accessed the Play Store during the last week. Meanwhile, the distribution of the over two-year-old Jelly Bean version continued to decline, but remains the leading platform, with a 50.1% share.
Android Ice Cream Sandwich accounted for 8.5% distribution, while Gingerbread remained installed on 9.8% of devices and all older versions accounted for less than 1% share. Many of the devices that are still running these older version of Android cannot be updated to a newer version due to discontinued support rom handset makers or carriers.
The adoption of Android KitKit has continued to rise over the past several months, although it still has a long way to go until it supplants Jelly Bean as the most installed version of Android on smartphones and tablets. For at least the foreseeable future, it appears that title will continue to belong to Android 4.1 through Android 4.3.
Android distribution numbers do not include information for devices running a version of the operating system lower than 2.2, as they do not support the latest Google Play Store app. The data as a whole reflects devices that are running and have accessed the latest version of the Play Store app during the past seven days.
