Google launches new community site to help make Google Translate better

Today, Google announced the launch of Translate Community, a site that will focus on improving translation quality for the 80 languages that the company’s software supports. In addition to making translation results better, the search giant hopes that its new group of dialect aficionados will help it develop support for more languages.

Google says it will open up ways for community members to contribute their skills, as well as offer more visibility of how input is being used. “We plan to incorporate your corrections and over time learn your language a little better,” wrote Sveta Kelman, Program Manager, Google Translate in a recent blog post. This new initiative follows suit with Google Translate’s recently added feature that lets users submit their own translation corrections or suggestions.

Between this and Mountain View’s other communication efforts, we can’t help but wonder how long it will be until the company tries to understand conversations between animals. Who’s ready for Google Dolittle?
