Motorola has plans for 12 more Moto Mods, current ones will be compatible with its next 3 years of phones

Modular smartphones haven’t taken off for a number of reasons, but one of the big ones is the fear that a year after purchasing your phone and bunch of mods, they’ll all become irrelevant with new hardware. Well, Motorola/Lenovo have just put those concerns to rest for Moto Mod owners.

Speaking to The Express Tribune regarding the Motorola’s return to the Middle East, Lenovo General Manager for Middle East Smartphones, Sharay Shams had the following to say regarding the company’s investment in Moto Mods:

It has revolutionized the smartphone industry with innovation which remained stagnant for the last 10 years. The company will introduce 12 Mods this year, which will remain compatible with the phones to be introduced by the company over the next three years.

So, there we have it. Current Mods and those around the corner for the Moto Z family won’t be irrelevant when the next smartphone comes out, as the company’s devices for at least the next three years will remain compatible. Shams further stated that Motorola will be introducing 12 new Moto Mods this year, although he didn’t mention any specifics. Odds are, at least a few will come from the ongoing Indiegogo projects where we’ve already seen some promising prototypes.

However, what does this mean for the next three years of Motorola devices? To keep Mods compatible, the company isn’t going to be able to change the design of the phone up all that much. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing since the Moto Z family is a pretty good-looking set of devices, it will certainly get a little stagnant over time. Hopefully, the company will come up with some creative ways to change-up the look of the phone, or find a way to offer a little more screen (possibly by following LG/Samsung’s lead with bezels).
