Nexus 5X, 6P devices on Android Beta Program now receiving OTA for final 7.1.1 release

While Android 7.1.1 began rolling out to Nexus and Pixel devices at the beginning of the month, users on the Android Beta Program have still been waiting for the final release. After a two week delay, the update is beginning to rollout to the Nexus 5X and 6P.

In the grand scheme, the final build of Android 7.1.1 was not all too different from the second Developer Preview released on November 22nd for the Nexus 5X, 6P, 9, and Pixel C. The only point of concern is how Beta Program devices were delayed in receiving the December security patch until nearly the end of the month.

Many Nexus 5X and 6P owners reported receiving the respective 65.1MB and 26MB update yesterday evening. If the notification has yet to appear, going to Settings > About phone > System update > Check for Update should pull the OTA.

After downloading, the process interestingly involves two reboots, with progress indicated by dots at the bottom of the “Installing system update” screen. Overall, the install process takes about a minute with users ending up on December’s NMF26F build.

For Nexus devices, Android 7.1.1 includes a number of new features including app shortcuts that provide quick access to key actions, new emoji, and image keyboard support. The latter feature is particularly showcased by Google Keyboard replacement Gboard.
