OnePlus 3T will replace the OnePlus 3, but both will get updates concurrently

Following OnePlus’ announcement on Monday of the OnePlus 3T, it was unclear if the company was planning to keep both models and offer flagships at two pricing tiers, or if it was planning to fully replace the OnePlus 3 with the OnePlus 3T. Now the company has confirmed that it’s the latter…

Speaking to Android Authority and XDA-Devleopers, OnePlus confirmed that there are no plans to restock the OnePlus 3 and that the device has been discontinued in both the United States and European countries. This counters other reports which surfaced stating that OnePlus was planning to sell the two devices side-by-side.

Another question surrounding the two devices was in regards to updates. OnePlus had already promised Android Nougat for the OnePlus 3 by the end of the year, so many wondered if the OnePlus 3T would share that same schedule. The answer is yes, both devices will share the same update cycle for now and in the future. That means that both devices will get Nougat by the end of the year and that the OnePlus 3 won’t be dropped from OnePlus’ updates since the two devices are “two versions of the same phone.”

It’s unclear if the two phones will share the same software build, but this is unlikely since they do not share the same processor. Updates will presumably just be pushed to both devices at the same time.
