New PaymentRequest API in Chrome 53 Beta allows for native in-browser payments on Android

Chrome 52‘s rollout to all platforms is near complete, bringing Material Design to the Mac and a number of features for Chrome OS. Version 53 is now in the beta channel with a number of user facing features specifically for Android.

At this year’s I/O, Google announced that it was working on a PaymentsRequest API that would allow for fast, seamless, and secure payments on the web using a credit card or Android Pay. By supporting the API, mobile sites gain an easy payment flow, with features like a native and standardized UI, multiple payments options, and verification.

Similar to autofill for other types of information fields, the API stores a user’s billing address, shipping details, and payer information for easier and quicker purchasing. Commerce sites can begin supporting the API, with Chrome 53 for Android being the first to support it. Other platforms will soon gain support for PaymentRequests.

Also on mobile, Chrome for Android will now autoplay muted video, while pausing video that begin playing sound before a user interaction. Further blurring the distinction between native and web apps, websites will be able to send notifications that feature a unique badge rather than the generic Chrome logo in the status bar.

On Chrome OS, version 53 brought Android apps and the Play Store to the much stabler beta channel. While there are still a number of bugs, the OS is prone to less errors when running Android apps on the Asus Flip, Acer R11, and 2015 Chromebook Pixel.

All these features apply to the latest Chrome Beta on all platforms. They should be available in the stable channel in approximately six weeks.
