Galaxy Note 7 logo leaks, iris scanner and other specs apparently confirmed

Update 2: It looks like Evan is on a roll right now — a second follow-up message is here to seemingly confirm a slew of additional, previously rumored specs: as per him, the Note 7 will sport a 5.7″ QHD AMOLED display, 64GB of expandable memory (via microSD; it’s unclear whether other storage options will see the light of day), a 12MP/5MP combo of cameras (back and front respectively, shutting down reports that wanted the Note 7 to have a dual camera setup, which we won’t likely see until the Galaxy S8 lands), IP68 certification, and three colorations: blue, black and white.

Update: A follow-up tweet by @evleaks also seems to confirm that the much rumored iris scanner will indeed make it to the Note 7. It is not sure what it will be used for, but we assume it will likely be related to biometric identification, much like fingerprint readers.

There has been much speculation regarding the sequel to America’s most loved phone. Most of it regarded its shape, but a series of leaked memos suggested that Samsung was looking forward to changing the name, too.

And now it seems like those leaks were all but true…

Here’s the thing: so far, each year, Samsung has released two families of high-end devices, one in H1 and the other in H2, ever since the first Note has come out. The Notes have represented the phablet line of Samsung’s flagships, while the Galaxy S ones were market as the firm’s more generic top smartphone.

However, the fact that the Galaxy S phones had been put into the market earlier than the Notes made it a little confusing as far as naming went. For example, back in 2013, the Galaxy S4 was being launched around March, only to be followed in late September by the Galaxy Note… 3 (and on and on to this day).

It’s not too terrible, but you can see Samsung’s point here; not only it launched two flagship devices with different numerations during the same year, but the one coming towards the end sported the same number used by its Galaxy S sibling approximately 18 months earlier.

And so, among the various reports we heard about the next Note moving towards a curvier design — we even got some beautiful renders of the phone, both video and stills — it was rumored that Samsung was willing to give the names some streamlining, and bring the device to the market as Galaxy Note 7, so to make it a more understandable companion to this year’s Galaxy S7 and S7 edge.

Now, thanks to the famous leaker Evan Blass, it looks like this will indeed be the case. In a tweet today, he posted an image of what appears to be the logo of the device, which has Samsung’s font and a nice bright-blue accent to the final part, which clearly spells “Note7”, accompanied by Blass’ comment, “confirmed”.

We don’t yet know whether Samsung is planning to launch the device as Note 7 but with a dual edge display, or whether a second “Note 7 edge” variant will make the cut as well. In any case, it looks like we will not have much to wait.
