Even with 6GB of RAM, the OnePlus 3 has some trouble with multitasking compared to the S7 Edge [Video]

Over the past couple years our smartphones have turned into powerhouses we never would have imagined even a few years ago, but things took a step even further earlier this week with the announcement of the OnePlus 3. With 6GB of RAM under the hood you’d expect this phone to be an exception in a world of laggy Android phones with subpar performance, but that doesn’t seem to be the case just yet…

In a recent video, YouTuber C4ETech compared the speed of his OnePlus 3 to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, and the results were pretty interesting. In the video he pits the Exynos-powered Galaxy S7 Edge which has 4GB of RAM against the standard Snapdragon 820-powered OnePlus 3 with 6GB of RAM. For his test he times each device through a series of opening several apps in sequence and shortly after opening other apps that are currently held in memory.

For the first round the Galaxy S7 Edge opens all 16 apps in 1:01. Meanwhile, the OnePlus 3 lags behind by 10 seconds finishing up in 1:11. Things get even more interesting however once you see how each phone keeps things in memory. The Galaxy S7 Edge quickly reopens each of the 16 apps pretty much instantly, completing the round in just 33 seconds. But the OnePlus 3 is seen constantly reloading apps completely, lagging behind at 1:10.

You would think looking at the spec sheet that the OnePlus 3 would steal the show here, but that’s just not the case. Even with an extra 2GB of RAM compared to the S7 Edge, the OnePlus 3 just can’t take the victory. Why? The answer likely lies with software. The OnePlus 3 likely has memory management issues that need to be sorted out, and it seems Samsung just did an overall better job of optimizing the S7 Edge.

Software updates will surely come to the OnePlus 3 over the next several months, so let’s hope these issues will be sorted out.
