On the eve of Google I/O, AT&T launches its GigaPower Fiber competitor in Google’s backyard

Google I/O officially kicks off tomorrow, but this evening AT&T has taken some wind out of the company’s sails. AT&T has announced that it is brining its Google Fiber competitor to the Bay Area in California. The company says that its GigaPower service is now available in “parts of” San Francisco, San Jose, Dublin, Mountain View, Santa Clara and San Ramon.

The news comes three months after Google announced it was bringing Fiber to select affordable housing properties, apartments, and condos and San Fransisco. Google has not, however, announced a full roll out of Fiber in San Francisco or any surrounding areas. AT&T, however, is also focusing heavily on apartments and condos in its initial rollout, as well.

Pricing for AT&T’s GigaPower service starts at $70 per month for 1Gbps speeds. Customers can also choose to add on DIRECTV or U-Verse TV for additional charges. AT&T says that with today’s announcement, GigaPower is now available in 1.6 million locations across 22 metro areas and AT&T says it has plans to expand to 34 more metro areas.

Here’s what AT&T is touting you can do with its GigaPower service:

  • Instantly access the latest online movies, music and games.
  • Connect faster to the cloud, videoconferencing and more.
  • Download 25 songs in 1 second, a TV show in 3 seconds or your favorite HD movie in less than 36 seconds.4

It’s unclear at this point if Google has any Fiber announcements planned for I/O this week, but nevertheless, it’s a very smart move for AT&T to make this announcement on the eve of the biggest week of the year for Google. You can read everything that we expect to see at I/O this week in Stephen’s detailed roundup.

Speeds up to 1 Gigabit per Second Available on the AT&T GigaPower Network in parts of the San Francisco and San Jose Metro Areas

AT&T1 today launched ultra-fast Internet service in parts of San Francisco, San Jose, Dublin, Mountain View, Santa Clara and San Ramon.2  These communities are in addition to the parts of the Cupertino area where we initially launched service in 2015.

Customers in tens of thousands of area homes, apartments and small businesses will be able to get speeds up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps)3 today, with plans to nearly triple availability by the end of the year. The service is currently available in nearly 30 apartment complexes in the Bay Area, such as at the LUMINA, also known as 201 Folsom Street, a 655-unit residential waterfront condominium in the Rincon Hill neighborhood.

Internet speeds up to 1Gbps over our 100% fiber AT&T GigaPower network are blazing fast.

  • Instantly access the latest online movies, music and games.
  • Connect faster to the cloud, videoconferencing and more.
  • Download 25 songs in 1 second, a TV show in 3 seconds or your favorite HD movie in less than 36 seconds.4

“By expanding AT&T GigaPower to additional cities in the Bay Area beyond Cupertino, we are demonstrating our continued commitment to our customers whose appetite for high-speed data continues to grow,” said Jeni Bell, vice president and general manager, Northern California and Northern Nevada at AT&T. “As the ways in which we communicate and seek entertainment become more data-intensive, our customers will benefit from our expansion of our AT&T GigaPower service.”

“AT&T is a valued member of our local business community and has played a strategic role in the economic growth and vibrant quality of life in Mountain View,” said Ken Rosenberg, vice mayor of Mountain View. “We are proud to have the AT&T GigaPower network and look forward to the new economic and innovation opportunities it will enable for our residents, entrepreneurs and small businesses.”

The AT&T GigaPower network is currently available in over 1.6 million locations across 22 of the nation’s largest metro areas. We have plans to expand the availability of ultra-fast Internet speeds up to 1 gigabit per second in parts of 34 more areas – at least 56 metros in total.

Ultimately, we’ll plan to reach more than 14 million residential and commercial locations with fiber.

AT&T has invested more than $7.4 billion in its wireless and wireline networks in California between 2012 through 2014. This drives upgrades to reliability, coverage, speed and performance for residents and business customers.

Additionally, our AT&T Business Fiber Internet service is already available to small businesses in parts of more than 180 U.S. cities, making it possible to download and upload at speeds up to 300 megabits per second.6 Certain markets, such as San Francisco, now have speeds up to 1 gigabit per second available over AT&T Business Fiber. We plan to expand to additional markets this summer. It supports business applications, such as video conferencing, working in the cloud and disaster recovery.
