Google I/O officially kicks off tomorrow, but this evening AT&T has taken some wind out of the company’s sails. AT&T has announced that it is brining its Google Fiber competitor to the Bay Area in California. The company says that its GigaPower service is now available in “parts of” San Francisco, San Jose, Dublin, Mountain View, Santa Clara and San Ramon.
The news comes three months after Google announced it was bringing Fiber to select affordable housing properties, apartments, and condos and San Fransisco. Google has not, however, announced a full roll out of Fiber in San Francisco or any surrounding areas. AT&T, however, is also focusing heavily on apartments and condos in its initial rollout, as well.
Pricing for AT&T’s GigaPower service starts at $70 per month for 1Gbps speeds. Customers can also choose to add on DIRECTV or U-Verse TV for additional charges. AT&T says that with today’s announcement, GigaPower is now available in 1.6 million locations across 22 metro areas and AT&T says it has plans to expand to 34 more metro areas.

It’s unclear at this point if Google has any Fiber announcements planned for I/O this week, but nevertheless, it’s a very smart move for AT&T to make this announcement on the eve of the biggest week of the year for Google. Speeds up to 1 Gigabit per Second Available on the AT&T GigaPower Network in parts of the San Francisco and San Jose Metro Areas
AT&T1 today launched ultra-fast Internet service in parts of San Francisco, San Jose, Dublin, Mountain View, Santa Clara and San Ramon.2 These communities are in addition to the parts of the Cupertino area where we initially launched service in 2015.
Customers in tens of thousands of area homes, apartments and small businesses will be able to get speeds up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps)3 today, with plans to nearly triple availability by the end of the year. The service is currently available in nearly 30 apartment complexes in the Bay Area, such as at the LUMINA, also known as 201 Folsom Street, a 655-unit residential waterfront condominium in the Rincon Hill neighborhood.

AT&T has invested more than $7.4 billion in its wireless and wireline networks in California between 2012 through 2014. This drives upgrades to reliability, coverage, speed and performance for residents and business customers.
Additionally, our AT&T Business Fiber Internet service is already available to small businesses in parts of more than 180 U.S. cities, making it possible to download and upload at speeds up to 300 megabits per second.6 Certain markets, such as San Francisco, now have speeds up to 1 gigabit per second available over AT&T Business Fiber. We plan to expand to additional markets this summer. It supports business applications, such as video conferencing, working in the cloud and disaster recovery.
