Google adds indoor Olympic venue maps ahead of 2016 Rio games

Google is constantly on a quest to add new, interesting visual tours to its popular Maps service, and its latest addition will help give you a taste of the Olympic venues ahead of this year’s competition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Having launched real-time transit to its Rio maps a few weeks ago, the most recent update adds indoor maps to all of the official outdoor and indoor venues set to be used in the Olympics this summer.

While the maps will undoubtedly come in useful for those planning to attend the games this year, it’ll also help bring a flavor of the venues to those of us who aren’t.

Now for the first time ever, you’ll be able to see indoor maps for 25 official indoor venues and enhanced outdoor maps of 12 official outdoor venues of the upcoming Olympic Games on Google Maps for desktop, Android and iOS.

Using indoor maps is easy. Just open Google Maps on your computer or mobile phone, search for a place that has indoor maps, zoom into the place, and click on it. At the bottom right side of the screen, choose among the floors and levels of the building. Points of interest like concessions, restrooms, information desks, and ATM machines are highlighted for easy identification.

As an example, you can dive right inside the well-known Maracanã stadium (used in the most recent FIFA World Cup), see various 360-degree views and take an indoor tour. Or you can head to the brand new Future Arena (Arena do Futoro) where handball games are set to take place during the games. You can even take a brief look at the custom-made outdoor Olympic Golf Course.

Google notes that it will also update its features within Maps to help make getting around Rio, commuting and avoiding traffic easier for locals while the games in town.
