Samsung releases January security update to “major flagship models”

With January coming to a close, Samsung has released their security update for this month just in time. This is continuing on the company’s promise to provide monthly security updates for its Android devices.

Samsung’s blog post doesn’t exactly specify which of its phones are getting the update beyond “major flagship models.” Samsung’s update includes all 12 patches released as part of this month’s Android Security Bulletin. The security holes range from moderate to critical in severity. Additionally, this update also includes seven vulnerabilities and exposures specific to Samsung devices that range from low to critical. They apply to devices running KitKat and Lollipop.

While the patch was released to Nexus devices at the beginning of the month, Samsung’s tardiness can be excused by the large number of phones they make. HTC only released the January security for their One A9 last week. While security updates seem minor and are only just a few MBs in size, it takes awhile to implement and make sure they run properly. For instance, OEMs were notified of January’s issues on December 7th of last year.

Earlier this morning, we reported that Samsung might begin rolling Marshmallow to the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, and Note 5 starting next month.
