OnePlus X in Champagne Gold: Unboxing the more limited budget flagship [Video]

It’s New Year’s Eve, so it’s time to crack open the champagne. Champagne version of the OnePlus X that is. They’re now available in limited quantities in Europe and Hong Kong, and will be coming to the US soon. This is our unboxing…

Like a lot of OnePlus products, the OnePlus X is packaged stylishly in a minimally-designed box. The entire surface of the box is pure white, apart from the small bright red OnePlus logo on the top. The glossy ‘X’ right on the front is barely visible.

One thing I really appreciate about the OnePlus X packaging is the cradle which holds the phone in place. It has a grippy plastic heel on the top and bottom, keeping the phone still and snugly in situ. Even with the absolute worst delivery driver, it’s unlikely it could ever slide around inside the box.

As always, there are a couple of user guides included, alongside the trademark bright red, flat USB cable with the exposed USB Type A connector on one end, and MicroUSB on the other. There’s a power adapter too.

We’ve already reviewed and unboxed the OnePlus X though. It’s the champagne gold and white coloring we were more interested in here. And I have to say, it looks rather good in white and gold.

The back is pure white glass with a gold OnePlus logo in the middle. The champagne gold almost borders on rose/pink gold in some light, and is fairly dark. It’s not the subtle almost-silver finish we’ve seen from other manufacturers. The capacitive buttons on the front have been colored to match the textured gold frame all around the edges.

You’ll notice the 3.5mm jack on the top edge has a slim plastic ring surrounding it, made in white to match the phone’s coloring and the other antenna bands on the top and bottom edges. On the right edge, there’s the power and volume controls and SIM/MicroSD card tray.

The only design choice I question is the black frame around the display. On the black model, it blends in to the rest of the phone’s front panel, when the screen’s on or off. But with the white version, it only looks good if what you have on-screen is black, or the display’s off. In those cases it looks edge-to-edge. Bring something white on screen though, and all of a sudden you have a black frame sticking out like a sore thumb.

As a reminder, here are the main specifications:

  • 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display
  • Snapdragon 801 processor
  • 3GB RAM
  • 16GB storage (expandable to 128GB via MicroSD)
  • 2,525mAh battery
  • 140 x 69 x 6.9mm
  • 13MP main camera with 1080p video
  • 8MP front camera
  • OxygenOS UI based on Android Lollipop

As I’ve written previously, the OnePlus X is one of the best small phones out there, and certainly one of the best phones for under $249. If you can get hold of one, and you’re on a budget, you’re unlikely to regret buying it.
