Samsung Pay debut pushed back to September after promising July launch

Samsung revealed a bit of setback today for Galaxy S6 owners hoping to get their hands on Samsung Pay this summer. As Bloomberg reports, the company announced on a call with investors today that it will miss its previous target of July for launching its mobile payment service. According to the Samsung executive, the company is now targeting sometime in September to roll out Samsung Pay in the United States and South Korea.Samsung originally announced its Samsung Pay mobile payment service in March alongside its flagship Galaxy S6 phone. The mobile payment service will allow users to make payments in stores using the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, and other phones in the future. Samsung even acquired the mobile payment service Loop Pay in February to boost its efforts against competing services including Apple Pay on the iPhone 6.

With Samsung Pay’s release being pushed back from July to September, the South Korean company is losing its lead against Android Pay as well. Google announced the new mobile payment service at its I/O developer conference last week, and plans to bring it to Android KitKat and later sometime this year.

Android Pay will benefit from being available on more handsets than what Samsung offers, although Samsung Pay may have an advantage of availability in South Korea. Samsung also plans to expand its mobile payment service to other regions including China, Europe, and South America, although we’ll have to see how smooth the US and South Korean launch goes in September.
